How to Write a Good Current Events Essay

A current events essay or paper is an assignment that involves analyzing a particular aspect of an event, situation, or phenomenon that impacts the world. It is an exercise that tests your writing, research, and critical thinking skills. Typically, it addresses the history, context, present state, and potential short- and long-term effects of a specific issue or trend. It can focus on topics from law, politics, sociology, science, economics, religion and faith, technology, sports, business, or medicine and health.

Before selecting a topic for your current event essay, be sure to check the instructions provided by your professor or educator. For instance, they may stipulate that your article should focus on current events that happened within a certain time period (e.g., last year). Moreover, they may ask that you write about a current event that pertains to a particular field, area, or industry.

Once you know the scope of your essay, start by finding a newspaper or online news site with articles that match your topic. Read the articles carefully as you take notes. Be sure to use the 5Ws and H to guide your research: Who, what, where, when, why, and how.

Make sure to choose a topic that grabs and engages your audience. Then, write a captivating introduction that is brief but not vague. Finally, provide a convincing argument based on facts and data. If possible, have someone proofread your article before submitting it for a grade.
