The first week of Parliament’s Monsoon Session has been marred by disruptions and protests by opposition parties. The Houses have been adjourned multiple times due to Opposition demand for discussion on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor, as well as Donald Trump’s claims of mediating peace between India and Pakistan. The government assured the Opposition at an all-party meeting that it would address these concerns. However, the Opposition continued sloganeering, leading to a further adjournment.
On a brighter note, the Lok Sabha passed the Bills of Lading (Amendment) Bill 2025 to modernise shipping documentation and align it with global standards, while also supporting entrepreneurship in the Indian ocean economy. It replaces the 169-year old Indian Bills of Lading Act, 1856, and will lead to reduced transaction costs, increased efficiency, and legal clarity.
In another significant development, the Hanuman Chalisa was recited within Parliament, marking the first time that this sacred Hindu scripture has been heard inside the Palace of Westminster. The move comes as part of a series of events to commemorate the centenary of the Houses of Parliament and celebrate its role in strengthening democracy, invigorating civic life, and promoting the values of tolerance, diversity, and freedom.
On the political front, the government will continue to answer questions from MPs on various issues, including the Pahalgam attack and Donald Trump’s mediation claims, while Opposition Peers will challenge regulations that allow foreign governments to hold up to 15% of the shares or voting rights in news organisations. The Prime Minister will appear before the House of Commons Liaison Committee, while Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Governor of the Bank of England Sir Tim Barrow will be interviewed by MPs on their role in the Brexit negotiations.
